Murray
was born in Calgary, Alberta on December 11, 1958. He
moved to Vancouver in 1976 and obtained his Bachelor
of Arts from the University of British Columbia in 1981.
In 1982, Murray completed a British Columbia Legislative
Internship and went on to obtain his law degree from
the University of Toronto in 1985. He was called to
the British Columbia bar the following year.
Since
his call to the bar, Murray has been a litigator. Early
in his career, Murray practiced law mainly in the field
of native land claims. For example, he worked on the
landmark case of Delgamuukw v. The Queen from trial
through to the hearing of the appeal before the Supreme
Court of Canada. However for the last ten years, Murray
has practiced mainly in the areas of personal injury
claims, commercial litigation and environmental cost
recovery claims.
PUBLICATIONS
Together
with Ross McLarty, Murray has recently co-authored both
the 2002 and 2001 Civil Litigation Practice Update Chapter
in the Continuing Legal Education Annual Review of Law
and Practice.
He
was also a co-author of "Recent Developments in
Fatal Accidents (Family Compensation Act) Litigation",
Canadian Journal of Insurance Law, Vol. 11, No. 6.
PROFESSIONAL
MEMBERSHIPS
Murray
has served as a chairperson of Canadian Bar Association
– B.C. Branch Aboriginal Law Section and continues
to be a member of the Aboriginal, Civil Litigation and
Environmental Law Sections.
He is also a member of the Trial Lawyers Association
of British Columbia and the Association of Trial Lawyers
of America.
COMMUNITY
SERVICE
Murray
has served as a member of the Board of Directors of
the West End Community Centre Association for three
years and as a volunteer for an additional four years.
